Welcome to

GENERATOR THE STARTUP CENTER OF THE STUTTGART MEDIA UNIVERSITY

You have a brilliant business idea? You’re asking yourself how you can realise and finance it? You have your own Startup but it’s not quite running smoothly yet? The Generator’s crew brings galactic ideas into a stable orbit and offers boundless energy for launches in the Stuttgart IT and creative industries.

‘Something’ with media? ‘Something’ with entrepreneurship?

With us you get both – and not just anything. We offer you:

CONSULTATION

You want to know if your business idea has potential? Or how to write an invoice? Or get your hands on funding and financing? Where to find people interested in founding with you? Or why socks disappear in the washing machine? We don’t have an answer for every question, but at least for most of them.

SEMINARS

Entrepreneurship can’t be learnt? That’s right. But everything that comes with it, such as: design thinking, legal matters, story-telling, validation, project management, marketing, conflict management, negotiation skills, public relations and much more.
For those interested in extra-occupational studies, we even offer a Masters.Für alle, die sich für ein berufsbegleitendes Studium interessieren, bieten wir sogar einen Master an.

FUNDING

The money for a venture isn’t lying around on the street. It’s hidden in funding safes that we can crack for you. The EXIST Founders Grant, Young Innovators and the Innovation Vouchers are among the most desirable state-run programmes. We help with the application process. And we’re really good at it.

Herz metall

WE LOVE MEDIA

That’s why all students, graduates and colleagues from the SMU who want to become self-employed are warmly welcome at the Generator.

ONE HEART FOR ALL

You’re freelancing while you study? Or want to give full throttle with your team? Whether a creative one-person entrepreneur or a software giant of tomorrow, we care for everyone the same.

NOTHING WORKS WITHOUT FEELING

Of course there’s some arithmetic involved, of course it doesn’t work without a business model. But there’s much more to it. Networks, soft skills, internationalisation – we also get you up to scratch in these areas.

Successes

WITH THE SPEED OF LIGHT TROUGH THE STARTUP-UNIVERSE

Media and self-employment, a perfect couple. Of course the SMU is top of the region for number of ventures launched. Around ten percent of SMU graduates become self-employed upon graduation, while the average between all higher education institutions in Baden-Württemberg is at around four percent (source: graduates’ survey 2013).

We’re also playing at the top of the league nation-wide. The SMU is frequently among the top ten of all German universities and colleges for most EXIST Founders Grants received.

Dozens of SMU Alumni companies are operating in and around Stuttgart, but also nationally and internationally. For the purpose of networking these with our new Startups, the Generation Media Startup (GMS) takes place yearly.

The Generator is also touring worldwide, such as with the design thinking competition “Entrepreneurial Brains Made On Campus” (EBMC) and as partner in European projects in the field of entrepreneurship.

What the startups say about us

Michael Hilkert
Roomtailors
We moved in two weeks ago but there are already know so many things that helped us: Contacts to the media university, to other startups and also, and for sure the most valuable thing, a contact to the helpful and humorous team from the Generator. It’s simply fun to be here.
Lena Euchenhofer
Helpmate
Starting small, but never stop thinking big: What would happen if some pennies could make the world a better place? We thought about this question in our Social Startup over and over again. But we never had to think about the full support by the crew of the Generator.
Tobias Lange
Conversional
In the beginning our startup developed different than we expected. But with the help of the Generator of the Media University we had the necessary space and support to boost our startup.
Larissa Lang
Helpmate
The creative and empowering atmosphere in the Playback as well as all the helpful mentorings and coachings were a big opportunity for us – especially in the beginning.
Benjamin Bestmann

The Generator supported us from the first moment on with our application for the Exist-Founders Grant. But also later we got a lot of help in the daily startup life. You really notice that the team behind the Generator has lots of knowledge and experience. We also felt very well and comfortable!
Ulf Kühnapfel
virtualQ® GmbH
With the help of Generator at Stuttgart Media University we could get in touch with a lot of other exciting startups. You can network easily, learn from each others experience but also inspire each other.
Sabrina Scherer

The Startup-Center Generator showed us the great enthusiasm for entrepreneurship!
David Maus

The Generator crew could help us with lots of our problems. They were able to answer many questions about funding with the support of their great network of the right partners and help us with their very helpful feedback on our application for contests and grants.

YOUR FLIGHT CREW

NOT FROM THIS STAR

Captain Dr. Hartmut „James T.“ Rösch
Director of the Startup Centre, consultant, international projects

Hartmut knows the way. That’s why he’s our captain. He has maintained the Generator steadily on course since 0711, sidereal time. When the threat of asteroid impacts or thundering ion storms arise, he fires away with his legendary Rhetoric Laser. At intergalactic table football tournaments with our captain, though, you can forget all about diplomacy.

Commander Magdalena „Magma" Weinle
Co-director, EBMC, consultant, international projects, press & PR

Magda is as old as the SMU’s Founders Universe. This is, however, unnoticeable after 9:30am. She has tightened the screws on countless entrepreneur ships of the Startup Fleet. When black holes originate in business models or project proposals, she pulls out her secret weapon: the polished word.

Commander Johanna „Canvas“ Kutter
Consultant creative industries

Johanna is the guardian of universal entrepreneurship knowledge. She comes from the planet of the Canvasianer, who have been offering the fitting planning tool for everything for millennia. She works tirelessly on new methods for beaming entrepreneurial know-how into the heads of students and colleagues.

Commander Martin „Spocky“ Papendieck
Masters Entrepreneurship, consultant EXIST, legal

Martin always has an ear for startups. As an Analogian, he finds so much fascinating. For example, this crazy so-called “Internet”, which will probably never prevail. He can smile, too. Especially if there are enough recruits for the Masters of Entrepreneurship.

Commander Dorothee „Accelera“ Mathes
SANDBOX Accelerator

Dorothee can perform magic. She transforms art into commerce and commerce into art. She altruistically takes care of gentle founders from the Creative Quadrant. She takes them in at our sandbox, whips some founders’ spirit into them and accelerates them to startup-hyper-light-speed.

Commander Violetta „Flash“ Fasulo
Project IN SITU, ADVANCE, Project UUX

Violetta soars through the Founders’ Galaxies faster than any comet. She looks for new lifeforms even in the most remote startup ecosystems. She then sets them upon our Playpark, which she herself built from the dust of the HdM pavilion in just three days.

Major Ülkü „Data“ Kazanci
Administration

Ülkü finds them all. Even in the last corner of the most remote galaxy, behind the seven Klingons, she can sense the tiniest of startups that ever studied anything to do with media. She is the Generator’s merciless alumni hunter. And yet so mercilessly nice.

Commander Florian „Razor“ Demaku
Project Spinnovation

Florian has something against old hats and hairy business ideas: a permanently loaded scalp phaser. At the same time, he is the most empathic member of the Generator crew, who gently but deliberately beams the freshman recruits onto the Entrepreneur Ship.

Commander Hannah „USP“ Schneider
Project Spinnovation

Hannah is traveling in her own space-time continuum. What feels like a complete startup weekend to us, lasts just a nanosecond for Hannah. She is currently researching a rapidly growing dwarf planet, which she created almost all by herself.

Commander Lisa „Da-Ah“ Lang
SANDBOX Accelerator, Project COCO4CCI

Lisa can see into the future and much further. Her stay on the planet Suomi gave her superpowers with which she finds the elusive creative startups of tomorrow. And that, without even looking. Just one blink and our accelerator is booked out for the next 20 light years.

Commander Kristina „Catcha“ Ćorić
Project Spinnovation Plus

Kristina always hits the target. When she fires her event phaser, it results in intergalactic Entrepreneurship Education Conferences and Startup Weekends of at least 3.7 Zentillion participants. Freshmen are beamed by her into innovation workshops immediately after enrollment.

Commander Nisha „Liquida“ Munzig
Project MikroCrowd

Nisha will navigate all safely through the financial cosmos. Our Crowd Pilot accompanies smaller startup missions on their quest for crowdfunding and microcredits. But beware! Those who follow her through Euron storms will likely have to close their business accounts due to oversaturation.

Commander Andreas „Scotty“ Schunk
Project Spinnovation Plus

Andreas has a solution for everything. Even for problems that do not exist yet. Since his service as a legionnaire on the Ryerson.CA of the Toronto Nebula, he has had visionary superpowers. He is constantly assembling innovative teaching modules and complex network formats on our spaceship.

Lieutenant Christian „Sulu“ Lütgens
Student Assistant

Christian listens very carefully. As a cross median, he feels the slightest vibration in the subtext space. Therefore, he knows exactly what matters when he shares in images and words the adventures of the Starship Generator with the infinite vastness of the startup universe.

Lieutenant Maurice „Galaxo“ Galanos
Student Assistant

Mo has principles. As a knight of the planet Graphicos, he took the oath of the typographer. They make Sparta seem like a bed of roses. Therefore, we do not ask twice when he chooses to smite a design with his mighty shield. When shooting a movie, the crew also better do what Galaxo commands.
